Psalm 112 stands as the twin companion to Psalm 111. While Psalm 111 celebrated the glorious character, justice, and works of God, Psalm 112 paints a vivid portrait of the person who fears that God. It shows us what happens when divine character gets mirrored in human life.

It is a devotional for times when bad news, uncertainty, or financial pressure loom on the horizon. Psalm 112 reveals that a life rooted in reverence for the Lord doesn't mean escaping trials—it means possessing a heart so anchored in God's promises that it cannot be shaken.

The Scripture

1 Praise the Lord. Blessed is the one who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands...

4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man. 5 Good will come to the one who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. 6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken; a righteous person will be remembered forever.

7 They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. 9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor.

Delighting in the Law of the Lord

The psalm opens with a declaration of genuine happiness:

"Blessed is the one who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands." (v. 1)

Notice the posture toward God's Word: "great delight."

When we view God's guidance as a heavy list of burdens, obedience feels exhausting. But when we realize that His commands are designed for our protection, flourishing, and peace, engaging with Scripture shifts from a duty into delight. Reverence for God naturally breeds a love for His instructions.

Light Dawning in the Dark

In verse 4, the psalmist offers a comforting promise for difficult seasons:

"Even in darkness light dawns for the upright..."

Notice that the psalm doesn't promise an immunity to dark days. Righteous people still face unexpected grief, financial distress, illness, and personal challenges. The darkness comes to everyone in a broken world.

The promise is what happens within that darkness: light dawns. God guarantees that no dark season in your life is permanent. He promises to provide guidance, comfort, and direction right when the night feels longest.

Furthermore, look at how the righteous person responds to that grace in verses 5 and 9: they become generous, lending freely and scattering gifts to those in need. Because they know God is their ultimate provider, they don't clutch their resources with tight, fearful fists; they pass God's light along to others.

No Fear of Bad News

Verses 7 and 8 contain one of the most reassuring declarations in the entire Psalter:

"They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear..."

Consider how much of daily anxiety comes from dreading the "what ifs." We worry about unexpected headlines, medical results, market drops, or family crises.

What makes a heart steadfast and secure when bad news arrives? It isn't self-confidence, wishful thinking, or denial. It is a settled habit of trusting in the Lord.

When your heart is firmly anchored in the unshakeable character of God (the God of Psalm 111), bad news doesn't collapse your foundation. You already know who holds your future, so your soul can stand firm even when circumstances shift beneath your feet.

Reflection & Application

Anchoring Against Bad News: Is there a potential outcome or "bad news" you've been dreading lately? Read verse 7 out loud, declaring over your heart: "My heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord."
Reflecting His Character: Look at verse 4 and 5. God is gracious and compassionate, and He calls us to reflect that by being generous. How can you freely share your encouragement, time, or resources with someone who needs light today?
Finding Delight in His Word: Ask God to shift your heart from seeing Scripture as a task to finding "great delight" in His promises as you read today.

Prayer

Praise the Lord! Father, thank You for the promise that even in darkness, Your light dawns for those who trust You. Forgive me for the moments I let fear of bad news control my mind or cause me to doubt Your care. Anchor my heart today. Make my spirit steadfast and secure, resting entirely in Your unshakeable goodness. Give me a generous heart that delights in Your commands and reflects Your light to those around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
