Unfailing Love and Faithfulness Meet: A Devotional on Psalm 85

Psalm 85 is a quiet, hopeful prayer written by the Sons of Korah. It opens with a grateful look backward at God’s past forgiveness, quickly transitions into an honest cry for current revival, and finishes with a breathtaking vision of the future.

It is the perfect psalm for those middle-ground seasons of life—when you’ve experienced God’s goodness in the past, but your present environment feels a little dry, tense, or stagnant, and you’re waiting for fresh life to burst through the soil again.

The Scripture

1 You, Lord, showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins...

4 Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us. 6 Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us your salvation.

8 I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—but let them not turn to folly... 10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss. 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.

The Discipline of Listening

After laying out his urgent plea for restoration in verses 1 through 7, the psalmist does something remarkably intentional in verse 8:

"I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people..."

Notice the shift in posture. He doesn't just pile up requests and then rush back into his busy routine. He makes a deliberate decision to sit still, quiet his mind, and tune his heart to hear God’s response.

We live in a world that constantly demands our immediate output—managing ongoing projects, keeping up with family communication, and reacting to every notification that hits our screens. It is so easy to let our prayer lives turn into a frantic list of demands without ever pausing to listen.

Psalm 85 reminds us that peace isn't something we manufacture; it’s something we receive when we slow down enough to hear what the Lord is actually saying over our lives. God promises peace to His people, but we have to create space in our schedules to hear His voice above the daily noise.

Where Heaven and Earth Embrace

In verses 10 and 11, the writer paints one of the most stunning, poetic pictures in all of Scripture:

"Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss. Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven."

Think about how difficult it is to balance those pairs in our human experience. Truth without love feels harsh and rigid; love without truth feels shallow and compromise-prone. Justice without peace creates friction; peace without justice is just an illusion.

But in God’s character—and ultimately at the cross of Jesus—these divine realities don't compete; they embrace. His unfailing love (hesed) meets His absolute truth, and His perfect righteousness merges seamlessly with His deep desire for our peace.

And look at the agricultural beauty of verse 11: "Faithfulness springs forth from the earth." When you choose to walk faithfully in the small, daily details of your life—doing your work with integrity, loving your family well, and trusting God through dry spells—that human faithfulness meets the righteousness looking down from heaven. God takes your quiet obedience and waters it with His grace, turning hard soil into a fertile garden.

The Land Yielding Its Harvest

The psalm finishes with a serene, confident promise of provision:

"The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps." (v. 12-13)

If you feel like you’ve been planting seeds of effort, care, and prayer into a situation that hasn't yielded much fruit lately, take heart today. The God who restored the land in times past is the exact same God who prepares the path ahead of you now.

He doesn't rush the growth process, but He guarantees the outcome. What He gives is genuinely good, and in His perfect timing, the dry seasons of waiting will give way to a fresh, joyful harvest.

Reflection & Application

Practicing the Pause: Where do you need to intentionally "listen to what God the Lord says" today? Take 3 to 5 minutes after reading this to sit in complete silence. Ask the Lord to speak peace over your anxieties before you jump back into your tasks.
Balancing Truth and Grace: Reflect on verse 10. Is there a relationship or situation in your life right now where you need God's help to balance "love and faithfulness"—holding fast to what is right while extending deep, gentleness and grace?
Trusting the Soil: Think of one area where you feel impatient for results or spiritual growth. Commit to staying faithful in the small steps today, trusting verse 11: Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and the Lord will give what is good.

Prayer

Show us Your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us Your salvation! Forgive me for the moments I rush through my days without pausing to listen to Your gentle voice. Speak Your peace over my mind and my home today. Help me to walk in faithfulness in every small task set before me, knowing that You are bringing together righteousness and peace in my life. I trust Your timing, and I thank You that You will withhold no good thing as You yield a harvest in my story. Amen.
