The Unshakeable City: A Devotional on Psalm 48
Psalm 48

Psalm 48 is a beautiful song of corporate worship known as a "Song of Zion." Written by the Sons of Korah, it celebrates Jerusalem—not merely as a triumph of human architecture, but as the physical manifestation of God's presence, protection, and covenant security on earth. For the believer today, this psalm shifts our focus from the fragile things we build with our own hands to the unshakeable, eternal Kingdom that God secures for us.
The Scripture
1 Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. 2 Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the ridges of the north, the city of the Great King...
9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. 10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness...
12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, 13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell them to the next generation. 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. — Psalm 48 (NIV)
The Greatness of the City is the Greatness of the King
The psalm opens with a famous declaration of praise: "Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God" (v. 1).
Notice the immediate connection between the character of God and the place where He dwells. Mount Zion is described as "beautiful in its loftiness" and "the joy of the whole earth" (v. 2). However, Jerusalem wasn't spectacular because it possessed the tallest buildings or the most extravagant wealth of the ancient world. It was glorious because "God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress" (v. 3).
We often spend our lives trying to build our own little "cities"—manicuring our reputations, securing our bank accounts, and fortifying our careers. We think safety lies in the strength of what we construct. But true stability only comes when we inhabit the presence of the Great King. It is His presence in our lives, not our own defensive walls, that makes us unshakeable.
An Intentional Meditation
In verse 9, the psalmist records a deliberate posture of worship: "Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love."
The word "meditate" here implies an intentional, focused mulling-over of truth. In the busy rush of life, our minds naturally drift toward tracking our problems, analyzing our stress, and anticipating crises. The Sons of Korah model a deliberate counter-habit. They walk into the sacred space, block out the noise of human traffic, and anchor their thoughts entirely on God’s "unfailing love" and His "righteous right hand" (v. 10). Worship is an intentional choice to redirect our mental real estate from the chaos of our circumstances to the character of our Creator.
Counting the Towers
The psalm concludes with a striking, practical instruction to the community:
"Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts..." (v. 12-13)
The people are told to physically inspect the city's defenses—to gaze at the massive towers, the strong walls, and the fortified palaces. Why? Not to take pride in human military engineering, but to witness firsthand how perfectly God had preserved them after foreign kings had tried to align against them and failed (v. 4-6). They were checking the receipts of God’s faithfulness so they could "tell them to the next generation" (v. 13).
We need to regularly "count the towers" in our own lives. When you trace the history of your life, you can see the places where God protected you, sustained you, and provided a way out when you felt completely overwhelmed. Compiling a mental catalog of His past faithfulness is the best armor you have against future anxiety. It reminds us of the ultimate conclusion of the song: "For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end" (v. 14).
Reflection & Application
Inspecting the Citadels: Take a few moments today to physically or mentally write down 3 or 4 distinct "towers" of God’s past faithfulness in your life—times when He sustained your health, mended a broken relationship, provided financially, or gave you peace in a storm.
The Temple Mindset: What has been dominating your thought life over the last few days? Dedicate 10 minutes today to sit quietly, close your eyes, and explicitly obey verse 9: "Lord, I choose right now to meditate exclusively on Your unfailing love."
Passing on the Testimony: Think about the younger generation or the people in your immediate circle of influence. How can you share the story of one of your "counted towers" with them this week to encourage their faith?
Prayer
Great are You, Lord, and most worthy of praise! Thank You for being the fortress and the absolute security of my life. Forgive me for the times I try to find safety in things I build myself. I choose to sit in Your presence today and meditate on Your unfailing love. Thank You for Your track record of faithfulness. I trust You to be my God forever and ever, and my faithful guide even to the very end. Amen.
