Psalm 118 stands as the triumphant finale of the Egyptian Hallel (Psalms 113–118). It is a procession song of thanksgiving—a victorious march into the gates of righteousness after surviving a desperate, life-threatening battle.

This psalm holds a monumental place in the story of redemption. It was the very song sung by the crowds as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday (v. 25–26), and it contained the prophecy Jesus applied to Himself when confronted by the religious leaders: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" (v. 22). It is a devotional for anyone standing on the threshold of a new season, reminding us that when human help fails, God’s steadfast love endures forever.

The Scripture

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever...

5 When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. 6 The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? 7 The Lord is with me; he is my helper... 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans...

14 The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation... 17 I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done...

22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 23 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

From Being Hard Pressed to a Spacious Place

The psalmist describes a moment of claustrophobic pressure:

"When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place." (v. 5)

The phrase "hard pressed" paints a picture of being cornered, hemmed in by trouble, or suffocated by anxiety. But when we cry out to God, He doesn't just grant us survival; He leads us into a "spacious place"—a realm of spiritual freedom, relief, and perspective.

In verses 6 through 9, the psalmist reaches a firm conclusion:

"The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?... It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans."

When we place our ultimate hope in human approval, political power, or self-reliance, we build our lives on shifting sand. Human help has clear limits. But when God is our refuge, fear loses its authority over our lives.

The Rejected Stone Made Cornerstone

In verses 22 and 23, the psalm reveals its most profound prophetic jewel:

"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes."

In ancient architecture, the cornerstone was the most vital piece of the entire foundation. It set the angle, alignment, and structural integrity for every other stone in the building. Masonry crews would carefully inspect stones, tossing aside any that seemed flawed or unusable.

The world looked at Jesus and rejected Him. He was dismissed by human experts, betrayed, and crucified outside the city walls. Yet God took that very "rejected stone" and made Him the supreme Cornerstone of eternal salvation (Acts 4:11; 1 Peter 2:7).

If you have ever felt rejected, overlooked, or written off by others, take heart. God’s evaluation of your life is what stands. He delights in taking what the world discards and building something magnificent and enduring through it.

This Is the Day the Lord Has Made

In verse 24, we find one of the most famous declarations in the Bible:

"The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

While we often pray this verse over a bright, sunny morning, its original context was born out of intense battle and redemption. "This very day" refers to the day of God’s decisive victory—the day the rejected stone became the cornerstone, the day salvation was won.

Every day we wake up as redeemed children of God is a day crafted by His grace. Regardless of the tasks, trials, or uncertainties on your calendar today, you can step into it with joy because the Cornerstone holds your life secure.

Reflection & Application

Moving to the Spacious Place: Are you feeling "hard pressed" or cornered by a situation right now? Cry out to the Lord today, and yield the burden to Him so He can bring your heart into His peace.
Checking Your Foundation: Is your confidence built on human approval and self-reliance, or on Christ the Cornerstone? Re-anchor your trust in His unshakeable love.
Choosing Joy Today: Read verse 24 out loud. Choose to approach today not with dread over your to-do list, but with gratitude for God’s salvation and presence.

Prayer

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever! Lord God, thank You for being my strength, my defense, and my salvation. When I feel hard pressed, lead my spirit into Your spacious place. Thank You for Jesus, the rejected Stone who became our glorious Cornerstone. Help me to step into this day with joy, taking refuge in You alone and proclaiming Your marvelous deeds. In Jesus' name, Amen.
