Psalm 16 is a "Miktam"—a golden jewel of a psalm. It is a song of total satisfaction. While other psalms cry out for rescue from enemies, this one focuses on the supreme joy of simply belonging to God. It is so profound that both Peter and Paul quoted it in the New Testament to describe the resurrection of Jesus.

The Scripture

1 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure...

11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. — Psalm 16 (NIV)

The Source of All "Good"

David begins with a radical statement of dependence: "Apart from you I have no good thing" (v. 2). In a world that constantly tells us we need more—more money, more influence, more comfort—David declares that God is the source and the definition of everything good in his life.

If we have God, but lose everything else, we still have "the good thing." If we have everything else, but don't have God, we have nothing of lasting value. This perspective shifts us from a life of "chasing" to a life of "resting."

The Boundary Lines

In verse 6, David uses the imagery of land ownership: "The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places." Often, we look at the "boundaries" of our lives—our limitations, our specific jobs, our family situations, or our health—and we complain that they are too restrictive. We wish our lines were drawn somewhere else. But David looks at the life God has measured out for him and sees it as a "delightful inheritance." When we trust that God is the one drawing the lines, we can stop envying our neighbor's "lot" and start enjoying our own.

The Unshakable Foundation

Verse 8 reveals David’s secret to emotional stability: "I keep my eyes always on the Lord." This isn't a passive glance; it is an intentional focus. Because David keeps God at his "right hand" (the position of a protector or legal advocate), he can say, "I will not be shaken."

  • When God is in front of us, the path is clear.

  • When God is beside us, the fear is gone.

  • When God is within us, the joy is full.

The psalm ends by looking past the grave. Because God is the "portion," even death cannot stop the joy. There is a "path of life" that leads straight through the valley of the shadow and into "eternal pleasures" at God's right hand.

Reflection & Application

  • Redefining "Good": Take a moment to look at your current blessings. Can you say with David, "Apart from You, I have no good thing"? Does your happiness depend on the gift or the Giver?

  • Accepting Your Lines: Are you currently fighting against a "boundary line" in your life (a limitation or a season of waiting)? How would it change your peace if you viewed that line as being placed by a loving God for your "delightful inheritance"?

  • Eye Contact: Is your gaze fixed on your problems or on the Lord? Today, every time you feel "shaken," practice turning your eyes back to Him.

Prayer

Lord, You are my portion and my cup. Thank You for drawing the lines of my life in pleasant places, even when I don't fully understand the map. Keep me from chasing after other gods or other "goods." Fill me with the joy of Your presence today and help me to walk the path of life with my eyes fixed on You. Amen.
