Psalm 94 is a passionate, deeply honest prayer born out of a world that feels upside down. It opens with an urgent appeal to the "God who avenges"—not a call for personal vengeance, but a heart crying out for divine justice in a world where proud, corrupt people exploit the helpless and act as if heaven doesn't notice.

It is a devotional for those moments when you look at unfairness, systemic corruption, or personal mistreatment and feel your own feet slipping into bitterness or despair. Psalm 94 reminds us that God is neither blind nor indifferent: He sees every detail, knows every thought, and serves as our ultimate defense.

The Scripture

1 The Lord is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth. 2 Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve...

7 They say, “The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice.” 8 Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? 9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?... 11 The Lord knows all human thoughts; he knows that they are futile...

18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. 19 When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy... 22 But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.

The God Who Formed the Eye

In verses 3 through 7, the psalmist describes the arrogant logic of the wicked: "The Lord does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice" (v. 7). They assume that because judgment doesn't fall instantly, God must be absent, blind, or unconcerned.

The psalmist dismantles this foolish assumption with brilliant, common-sense logic in verse 9:

"Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see?"

Think about the sheer design of creation. The God who constructed the intricate engineering of the human ear is hardly deaf to the cries of the suffering or the arrogant claims of the proud. The Creator who designed the incredible lens of the human eye is not blind to injustice, hidden dishonesty, or quiet pain.

Furthermore, verse 11 adds: "The Lord knows all human thoughts." God doesn't just watch actions; He discerns motives, intentions, and heart attitudes. Nothing done in secret remains hidden from Him. You can rest knowing that no unfair treatment, no silent sacrifice, and no hidden injustice passes by His notice.

Supported When Feet Are Slipping

In the second half of the psalm, the focus shifts from global justice to the personal, inner experience of the believer facing intense pressure.

The psalmist makes a vulnerable confession in verses 18 and 19 that every one of us can identify with:

"When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

Look at those two vivid internal moments:

The Slipping Foot: You feel like you are losing your balance—emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. The load gets too heavy, the circumstances feel unfair, and you feel like you're about to fall under the weight of it all. Right at that exact moment, God’s unfailing love (hesed) reaches out and catches you.
Great Anxiety Within: Your mind is spinning with "what ifs," crowded thoughts, and worst-case scenarios. Human advice feels thin, but God’s consolation—His gentle truth, His Holy Spirit, His quiet presence—steps into the chaos of your mind and restores real, deep joy.

Notice that God doesn't wait until the entire world is fixed before He supports your slipping foot. He meets you right in the middle of the storm with personal, gentle care.

The Unshakeable Rock

The psalm concludes with a firm, confident declaration of refuge:

"But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge." (v. 22)

When human systems fail, when workplace dynamics feel unjust, or when circumstances seem completely unpredictable, you don't have to build your security on shifting sand. You can step inside the fortress of God's character.

The proud and the corrupt may have temporary power, but their foundation is hollow. The believer who trusts in the Lord rests on an eternal, unshakeable Rock that no storm can ever destroy.

Reflection & Application

Releasing the Need to Settle Accounts: Is there a situation where you feel mistreated or unfairly judged? Instead of replaying the offense or trying to settle the score yourself, surrender it to the God who sees every detail (v. 9) and judges righteously.
Catching the Slipping Foot: Where do you feel like your "foot is slipping" right now—stamina, patience, peace, or faith? Pray verse 18 aloud today, asking God's unfailing love to hold you steady.
Exchanging Anxiety for Consolation: What noisy, anxious thought is crowding your mind today? Pause for 3 minutes, lay that thought before the Lord, and ask Him to replace it with His quiet consolation and joy (v. 19).

Prayer

Lord, God of justice and comfort! Thank You that You formed the eye and implanted the ear—You see every circumstance I face, and You hear every quiet cry of my heart. Forgive me for the moments I let anxiety overwhelm my thoughts or worry that You have taken no notice. When my foot feels like it is slipping under stress, let Your unfailing love catch me. Be my fortress, my rock, and my steady refuge today. Amen.
