Our Dwelling Place in Every Generation: A Devotional on Psalm 90

Psalm 90 marks a major shift in the Psalter—it is the opening song of Book Four, and it carries the unique title: "A prayer of Moses the man of God."

Think about the context of Moses’ life. He spent forty years leading a restless, nomadic community through a harsh wilderness. He watched an entire generation pass away in the desert, burying friends and family in unmarked sand. If anyone understood the frailty of human life, the swiftness of time, and the deep need for a permanent home, it was Moses.

Written from the edge of the wilderness, Psalm 90 offers a profound, grounding perspective on our fleeting days and points us to the eternal God who anchors our work, our time, and our true security.

The Scripture

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God...

4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night... 10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away...

12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom... 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days... 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.

The Home That Never Moves

Moses begins with a breathtaking declaration: "Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations" (v. 1).

Moses never owned a permanent home on earth. He lived in temporary tents, constantly pitching and pulling up stakes, moving across dusty terrain. Yet, he realized that his true home wasn't a brick-and-mortar structure or a settled piece of land. God Himself was his home.

In a fast-paced world where plans change, schedules shift, and external circumstances can feel totally unpredictable, it is easy to feel unrooted. We look for stability in our careers, our routines, or our living spaces. But Psalm 90 reminds us that before the mountains were formed, God was God—and He remains our unshakeable, permanent dwelling place today. When your soul is housed in Him, you are safe no matter how much the landscape around you shifts.

The Wisdom of Numbering Our Days

In verses 3 through 10, Moses contrasts the eternal nature of God with the fragile, fleeting nature of human life. He compares our years to a quick night watch, a blade of grass that springs up in the morning and fades by evening, or a brief sigh.

Then he drops a famous, life-altering prayer in verse 12:

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Notice that Moses doesn't ask God to count our days for us—he asks God to teach us how to number them. To "number our days" means recognizing that our time on earth is finite and precious. It means waking up each morning with a holy awareness that today is a gift not to be wasted on endless distraction, petty anxieties, or friction over trivial things.

Wisdom begins when we stop living as if we have an infinite amount of tomorrows. When you realize your time is limited, you prioritize what truly matters: loving God, serving the people around you, and investing in things that carry eternal weight.

Satisfied Morning and Established Hands

The psalm finishes with two beautiful requests that anchor our daily routine:

1. Morning Satisfaction (v. 14): "Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love..." Notice the timing. Moses doesn't wait until the end of a long, exhausting day to look for joy. He asks God to satisfy his heart first thing in the morning. Before the noise of the day hits, anchoring your heart in God's love sets the tone for everything that follows.

2. Established Work (v. 17): "Establish the work of our hands for us..." On our own, human efforts quickly fade and fall apart. But when we invite God's favor over our daily tasks—our jobs, our creative projects, our family care, and our service—He takes our fragile, temporary efforts and gives them lasting, eternal value.

Reflection & Application

• Making Him Your Home: Where have you been looking for security or stability lately? Take a moment to pray verse 1: "Lord, You are my dwelling place." Consciously rest your thoughts in His presence today.

• Numbering Today: If you viewed today as a unique, non-repeatable gift, what priority or relationship would you focus on? Is there a worry or small distraction you need to let go of?

• Praying Over Your Work: Before you dive into your next task or project, pause and pray verse 17: "Lord, let Your favor rest on me, and establish the work of my hands."

Prayer

Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations! Before the mountains were born, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. Teach me to number my days so that I may walk with a heart of wisdom. Satisfy me every morning with Your unfailing love, so that I can sing for joy and live with peace. Let Your favor rest upon my life today, and establish the work of my hands for Your glory. Amen.
