MARRIAGE

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up... A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (v. 9-10, 12)

The Heart of the Matter

I’ll tell y’all, there is something so sweet about changing your last name and starting a brand-new life with the person you love. This past November 7th, I didn't just gain a husband; I gained a partner for the trail.

In our neck of the woods, we know that trying to mend a fence or work a field by yourself is a tough row to hoe. Solomon knew that, too. He reminds us that "two are better than one." In marriage, God gives us a built-in helper—someone to laugh with when the sun is shining and someone to grab our hand when the path gets a bit rocky.

The Third Strand

But here is the "secret sauce" for a marriage that lasts longer than a Texas summer: The Cord of Three Strands. It’s easy to think that marriage is just about two people—Kaitlin and Aaron, or you and your spouse. But if it’s just the two of us, we’re eventually going to run out of patience, energy, or words. That "third strand" is the Lord Himself. When Jesus is woven into the very center of your marriage, that cord isn't easily broken. He’s the one who gives us the power to forgive when we’re grumpy, to serve when we’re tired, and to love when we don't feel like it.

Serving Your Way to a Strong Home

Y'all know I love to work and serve. I’ve found that the best way to pour into my marriage is to treat it like a mission field. It’s about finding joy in the little things—making that favorite meal, offering a word of encouragement after a long day, or praying together before our heads hit the pillow. When we stop asking "What can I get?" and start asking "How can I serve?", that’s when the real magic happens.

A Moment of Reflection

  • How are you strengthening your "third strand" today? Take a moment to pray with and for your spouse.

  • What is one small, practical way you can serve your partner this week? (Maybe it’s handling a chore they dislike or writing a sticky note for the bathroom mirror!)

A Prayer for the Journey Together

Lord, thank You for the gift of marriage and for the blessing of a partner to walk this trail with. We invite You to be the very center of our home—that third strand that holds us tight when the winds of life start to howl. Help us to serve one another with gladness, to be quick to forgive, and to never let the sun go down on our anger.

Grant us the grace to see our spouse through Your eyes and the patience to love them well through every season. We ask that You would guide our steps as we blaze this trail together, keeping our hearts tethered to Your Truth and our home filled with Your peace. Amen.
