Psalm 115 is the third hymn in the Egyptian Hallel (Psalms 113–118). It stands as a powerful anthem contrasting the living, active God of Israel with the lifeless, powerless idols of the nations.

It is a devotional for recalibrating our priorities, stripping away human pride, and anchoring our trust entirely in the Lord—who made heaven and earth, remembers His people, and pours out His blessing upon those who fear Him.

The Scripture

1 Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.

2 Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” 3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. 4 But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. 5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. 6 They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell... 8 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

9 All you Israelites, trust in the Lord—he is their help and shield... 12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us... 13 he will bless those who fear the Lord—small and great alike.

The Engine of True Worship

The psalm opens with one of the most famous declarations of humility in all of Scripture:

"Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness." (v. 1)

This verse is the antidote to human arrogance and self-centeredness. So often, we subtly want recognition for our achievements, our hard work, or our spiritual growth. But Psalm 115 refocuses our hearts: the goal of our lives is not our own reputation, comfort, or applause, but the glory of God's name.

Notice why we give Him glory: "because of your love (hesed) and faithfulness." God's glory is not an arbitrary demand; it is the natural response of hearts that have experienced His relentless covenant love and steadfast grace.

You Become What You Worship

In verses 4 through 8, the psalmist exposes the tragic absurdity of idolatry:

Idols are made by human hands out of silver and gold (v. 4).
They have mouths that cannot offer comfort, eyes that cannot see your tears, and ears that cannot hear your prayers (v. 5–7).

Then comes the striking spiritual principle in verse 8:

"Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them."

We become like what we worship. If we anchor our trust in earthly idols—wealth, career status, approval, or self-reliance—we eventually become like them: spiritually blind, deaf, and hollow. But when we worship the living God, who speaks truth and acts in love, we are transformed into His image, becoming vibrant, purposeful, and alive.

He Is Their Help and Shield

In response to the powerless idols of the world, verses 9 through 11 sound a repeated, rhythmic call to trust:

House of Israel, trust in the Lord—He is their help and shield!
House of Aaron, trust in the Lord—He is their help and shield!
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord—He is their help and shield!

Earthly security measures can fail, human strength gives out, and plans change. But God is both your Help (the One who provides strength when you are weak) and your Shield (the One who protects you when trials strike).

Furthermore, verse 13 promises that "he will bless those who fear the Lord—small and great alike." God doesn't reserve His presence, care, or blessings for the prominent or powerful. Whether you feel "small" or "great" in the eyes of the world today, the Creator of heaven and earth remembers you and delights to bless your life.

Reflection & Application

Praying Verse 1: Start your day or your next major project by praying verse 1 out loud: "Not to me, Lord, but to Your name be the glory." Use it to surrender your need for approval or control.
Checking Your Heart's Trust: Is there a modern "idol"—such as financial security, control over the future, or human approval—that has been competing for your trust lately? Turn your focus back to the Lord, your Help and Shield.
Resting in His Remembrance: Meditate on verse 12 ("The Lord remembers us and will bless us"). Let the truth that the Almighty God has you on His mind bring quiet peace to your spirit today.

Prayer

Not to us, Lord, but to Your name be the glory! Thank You for Your unfailing love and steadfast faithfulness toward me. Forgive me for the times I put my trust in earthly things or seek my own recognition instead of honoring You. You alone are the living God, my Help and my Shield. Bless my heart with Your peace today, and help me live a life that reflects Your glory to the world around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
