Psalm 31 is the prayer of a person under siege. David is dealing with physical distress, social isolation, and "terrors on every side." Yet, in the middle of a collapsing world, he finds a "rock of refuge." This psalm is famous for providing the final words of Jesus on the cross, teaching us how to surrender our spirits to a God who is both a Fortress and a Friend.
The Scripture
1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me...
5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.
9 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief... 14 But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies and from those who pursue me.
24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. — Psalm 31 (NIV)
The Refuge of Identity
David starts with a plea for God to be his "rock of refuge" and "strong fortress" (v. 2). However, in verse 3, he makes a fascinating statement: "Since you are my rock and my fortress..."
David isn't asking God to become something He isn't; he is asking God to be who He already is. When we are in distress, we don't need to convince God to protect us. We simply need to step into the "fortress" that is already built. Prayer is often the act of reminding ourselves that our Refuge is already standing.
Surrender in the Storm
Verse 5 contains the ultimate expression of trust: "Into your hands I commit my spirit."
When Jesus quoted this from the cross, He was demonstrating the final act of a life lived in total dependence on the Father. To "commit your spirit" means to hand over the core of who you are—your future, your reputation, your very life—into God's keeping. It is a release of control. When we stop trying to hold our own lives together with our own trembling hands, we find they are much safer in His "faithful hands."
The Calendar of Grace
In verse 15, David declares: "My times are in your hands."
This is a powerful antidote to anxiety. "My times" refers to the seasons of life—the moments of success, the years of waiting, the days of grief, and the hour of deliverance. We often feel like our "times" are in the hands of our boss, our doctor, the economy, or our enemies. But David refutes that. If God holds your "times," then nothing can happen to you that is outside of His sovereign care. Your life is not a series of accidents; it is a story held by a Faithful God.
The Call to Courage
The psalm ends with an exhortation to the "great assembly": "Be strong and take heart" (v. 24).
Notice that this courage isn't something we manufacture by being "tough." It is the natural result of "hope in the Lord." Courage is simply trust in action. Because our spirit is in His hands and our times are in His hands, we can face the "terrors on every side" with a heart that remains steady.
Reflection & Application
The Hand-Off: What are you currently trying to "hold" on your own? Visualize yourself placing that concern—whether it's a person, a problem, or a plan—into the hands of God. Say aloud: "Into Your hands I commit this situation."
Trusting the Timing: If you feel like you are in a "waiting season," remind yourself of verse 15. Your "times" are not behind schedule or forgotten; they are held by the One who is never late.
Finding the Fortress: Identify one "terror" or worry that is currently pursuing you. How does viewing God as a "Strong Fortress" change your perspective on that threat?
Prayer
Lord, I have taken refuge in You. I commit my spirit and my current distress into Your faithful hands. Thank You that my times are not in the hands of chance or of my enemies, but in Yours. Give me the strength to take heart today, knowing that You are my rock and my rescuer. Amen.
