Psalm 116 is the personal, tender heart of the Egyptian Hallel (Psalms 113–118). It is the hymn of a survivor—someone who stood at the very brink of death, cried out in anguish, and experienced the personal, rescuing hand of God.

Because this psalm was traditionally sung at the Passover meal, it carries profound spiritual weight: these were very likely the words Jesus sang in the upper room on the night He was betrayed, just hours before going to the cross. It is a devotional for anyone who has been delivered out of a season of deep trial, offering a blueprint for how to respond to God’s immense goodness.

The Scripture

1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow. 4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: “Lord, save me!”

5 The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. 6 The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me. 7 Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you...

12 How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. 14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

He Turned His Ear to Me

The psalm opens with one of the most intimate expressions of affection in the Bible:

"I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live." (v. 1–2)

The imagery in verse 2 is that of a loving parent stooping down low to put their ear right next to the lips of a whispering, hurting child.

God doesn't listen to your prayers with cold, distant detachment. When you are overcome by distress, sorrow, or physical weakness, the Almighty God inclines His ear toward you. He hears not just your spoken words, but the quiet ache of your heart. And because He listened in your darkest hour, your natural response is lifelong trust and love.

Return to Your Rest, My Soul

In verse 7, the psalmist speaks directly to his own internal world:

"Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you."

Notice how easily our souls lose their rest. Anxiety, unexpected trouble, and daily pressures push our minds into hyper-vigilance, making us forget the security we have in God.

The psalmist commands his soul to return to rest—not by wishing his problems away, but by remembering a proven fact: "the Lord has been good to you." Looking back at God’s past track record of faithfulness is the single best way to quiet present restlessness. He has delivered your soul from death, your eyes from tears, and your feet from stumbling (v. 8).

Lifting Up the Cup of Salvation

In verse 12, the psalmist poses a profound question:

"How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?"

How do you repay an infinite, unpayable debt of grace? Verse 13 gives the surprising answer:

"I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord."

You don't repay God by trying to earn His favor or offering Him gifts He doesn't need. You "repay" a generous God by drinking deeply of the salvation He provides and asking Him for more!

To lift up the cup of salvation means to receive His grace with open, thankful hands, praising Him publicly (v. 14), and living out your life as a free servant released from the chains of fear (v. 16).

Reflection & Application

Preaching Rest to Your Soul: Is your mind feeling anxious or restless today? Pause, take a deep breath, and pray verse 7 out loud to your heart: "Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you."
Lifting the Cup of Gratitude: Write down 3 ways God has delivered you from tears, stumbling, or distress in the past. Thank Him for each one, lifting up your "cup of salvation" in joyful prayer.
Calling on Him Always: Make David’s vow in verse 2 your personal commitment today: "Because He turned His ear to me, I will call on Him as long as I live."

Prayer

I love You, Lord, because You heard my voice and my cry for mercy! Thank You for bending down to listen to me when I was brought low. Forgive me for letting my heart get tossed around by anxiety when You have already proven Your goodness to me. I command my soul to return to your rest today in You. I lift up the cup of salvation with full, grateful hands, declaring Your praise in Jesus' name, Amen.
