From the Dust to the Throne: A Devotional on Psalm 113

Psalm 113 opens the Egyptian Hallel (Psalms 113–118), a collection of praise psalms traditionally sung during major Jewish festivals, including Passover. It is very likely the hymn Jesus and His disciples sang in the upper room before heading to the Mount of Olives.

This short, breathtaking song presents one of the most magnificent contrasts in all of Scripture: God’s absolute, transcendent majesty above the heavens, paired with His intimate, tender condescension to lift up the forgotten and broken.

The Call to Continuous Praise

The psalm begins with an urgent, triple invitation to praise the Lord:

Praise the name of the Lord.
Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.

This is not localized or temporary worship. The psalmist envisions praise that spans all of time—from now and forevermore—and all of space—from sunrise to sunset.

No matter what season of life you step into today, God is worthy of honor. When your day begins and when the sun sets, when circumstances are joyful or when the path is steep, His character remains entirely worthy of our heart's adoration.

High Above the Nations, Stooping Down to Earth

The heart of the psalm asks a rhetorical question that echoes across eternity: "Who is like the Lord our God?"

Consider the picture painted here:

He is exalted far above all nations.
His glory sits higher than the heavens.
He sits enthroned on high.

Yet, to look upon the heavens and the earth, God must stoop down. He is so infinitely great that even the highest galaxies and celestial beings are beneath His throne.

Yet, what does this magnificent God do with His absolute power? He doesn't remain distant or indifferent. Instead, He stoops down to care for the lowest and most vulnerable.

Lifting the Needy from the Dust

The psalmist highlights two specific examples of God’s redemptive care:

The Poor and Needy: God raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, seating them with princes—the rulers of His people.
The Barren Woman: In ancient Near Eastern culture, childlessness carried immense social stigma, grief, and economic vulnerability. God settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children.

In a world that routinely steps over the weak to elevate the powerful, God turns human priorities upside down. He notices the person sitting in the ashes of disappointment, poverty, or heartbreak. He does not leave them in the dust; He bends down, lifts them up, and grants them dignity, honor, and a place of belonging.

This profound truth reaches its ultimate expression in the Gospel. Jesus Christ, who shared the Father's glory in heaven, stooped down to take on human flesh. He entered our dust, bore our griefs, and was raised from the grave so that we—who were spiritually bankrupt and destitute—might be seated with Him in heavenly places as children of the King.

Reflection & Application

Practicing Sunrise to Sunset Praise: What is one simple way you can mark the beginning and end of your day with gratitude? Try starting tomorrow morning and closing tomorrow night with a brief prayer praising God for who He is.
Trusting Him in the Dust: Are you feeling low, forgotten, or weighed down by disappointment today? Remind your soul that the God who reigns above the heavens is the very One who stoops down to lift you up out of the ashes.
Mirroring His Compassion: Who in your circle of influence is currently feeling overlooked, needy, or brokenhearted? How can you reflect God’s heart by bending down to offer them dignity, encouragement, or practical help today?

Prayer

Praise the Lord! God, who is like You? You are exalted above all the nations, and Your glory shines higher than the heavens. Yet, in Your immense grace and love, You stoop down to care for me. Thank You for lifting my life out of the dust through Jesus Christ and giving me a secure place in Your family. Teach me to praise Your name from the rising of the sun to its setting, and use my life to lift up those who are hurting today. Amen.
