A New Song for a Victorious King: A Devotional on Psalm 98

Psalm 98 is an exuberant, joy-filled song of praise that forms part of the royal enthronement psalms. It celebrates the salvation, victory, and righteousness of God, inviting all people—and indeed, all of creation—to join in an overflowing chorus of worship.

It serves as a powerful reminder that our faith is rooted in what God has already accomplished and the glorious hope of what He will do when He establishes His righteous reign forever.

The Scripture

1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. 3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn— shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; 9 let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

The Victory of God’s Right Hand

The psalm begins with an urgent call to praise God for His marvelous deeds. The psalmist highlights that God has revealed His salvation and made His righteousness known to all nations. When the Scriptures speak of God’s "right hand" and "holy arm," they point to His holy power, strength, and active intervention in human history.

God is not a passive observer watching the world from afar. He steps into history to deliver, redeem, and restore. He remembers His unfailing love and His faithfulness toward His people. When life feels unpredictable or overwhelming, we can draw confidence from the truth that the same divine power that brought redemption in the past remains fully active today.

A Symphony of Joy

The call to worship in Psalm 98 isn't quiet or reserved; it is a joyous, multi-voiced celebration. The psalm envisions music filling the air—harps, trumpets, and the blast of the ram’s horn—as people make a joyful noise before the King.

This joyful noise reflects a deep, heart-felt gratitude. Praise transforms our perspective. When we focus on God's character and His marvelous works, our worries shrink in light of His supreme greatness. Worship pulls us out of self-absorption and fixes our minds on the true source of our hope and strength.

Creation Joins the Chorus

In the final movement of the psalm, the invitation to praise expands beyond humanity to encompass the physical earth itself:

• The Sea: The roaring oceans and everything dwelling in them are called to resound with praise.

• The Rivers: The flowing rivers are pictured as clapping their hands in celebration.

• The Mountains: The majestic peaks join together in joyful song before the Lord.

Creation anticipates the arrival of the King because He comes to judge the earth in righteousness and fairness. In the biblical vision, God’s judgment is not something to fear for those who trust Him; it is the long-awaited setting right of a broken world. It means the end of evil, oppression, and suffering, and the ushering in of eternal peace (shalom).

Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s salvation was decisively made known. As we look forward to His return, we live in joyful expectation, knowing that the ultimate victory belongs to our Lord.

• Joining the Chorus of Praise: Instead of letting anxious thoughts dictate your morning, choose to open your day with worship. Let your heart "make a joyful noise" to God through song or spoken praise.

• Living in Expectant Hope: When global events or personal challenges feel heavy, re-anchor your thoughts in the truth that King Jesus is coming to establish ultimate justice and peace. Let that hope shape your outlook today.

Lord, I sing a new song to You today because You have done marvelous things! Thank You for making Your salvation and righteousness known in my life through Jesus. When I look around at a world in need of healing, help me remember that You reign supreme. Tune my heart to praise You alongside all creation, and grant me the steady joy that comes from trusting in Your ultimate victory. Amen.
